FAQ (Tree and Healthcare)
Hardwoods (Oak, Maple, Beech)
- Oak Wilt ( Ceratocystis fimbriata): A highly aggressive fungal disease, particularly impacting Red Oaks. Symptoms include rapid leaf drop, often starting at the top of the tree. Severity: High. Can spread rapidly through root grafts. Management includes preventative fungicide injections and removal of infected trees.
- Anthracnose (various fungal species): Common on Oaks and Maples, especially during wet springs. Causes leaf spots and defoliation. Usually not fatal to mature trees, but can weaken them. Severity: Low to Moderate. Typically managed through cultural practices (pruning for air circulation, leaf litter removal).
- Maple Wilt ( Verticillium dahliae): Affects Maples, causing wilting, leaf scorch, and branch dieback. Can be fatal, especially to younger trees. Severity: Moderate to High. No cure; management focuses on prevention (proper planting, avoiding stress).
- Beech Bark Disease (Scale insect & Nectria fungus): A complex disease impacting American Beech. Scale insects create wounds, allowing the fungus to enter. Causes cankers and eventual tree death. Severity: High. Management includes preventative insecticide applications and removal of severely infected trees.
Softwoods (Pine, Spruce, Fir)
- Pine Wilt ( Bursaphelinus xylophilus): Transmitted by pine sawyer beetles. Causes rapid needle drop and tree death. Primarily affects Scots Pine, but can impact other species. Severity: High. Preventative insecticide treatments can protect trees.
- Sirococcus Shoot Blight ( Sirococcus strobilinus): Affects Eastern White Pine. Causes flagging (browning) of shoots. Typically not fatal, but can be aesthetically damaging. Severity: Low to Moderate. Pruning infected shoots can help.
- Spruce Needle Cast (various fungal species): Causes needles to turn brown and drop prematurely. Common on Colorado Blue Spruce. Severity: Low to Moderate. Fungicides can provide some control.
- Cytospora Canker ( Cytospora kunzei): Affects various conifers, causing cankers on branches and stems. Can weaken trees and make them susceptible to other pests and diseases. Severity: Moderate. Pruning infected branches and maintaining tree health are important.
Dogwood
- Dogwood Anthracnose ( Discula destructiva): A serious fungal disease affecting Flowering Dogwood. Causes leaf spots, cankers, and twig dieback. Can be fatal. Severity: High. Fungicides can provide some control, but preventative measures (proper planting, pruning) are crucial.
